HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Trade winds will continue to drive the weather pattern this week. Breezy conditions have developed statewide and wind speeds will continue to grow in strength as the week progresses. High pressure to the north of the island chain will strengthen, leading to strong east/northeasterly winds.
Some sustained winds could reach as high as 30 miles per hour, with gusts pushing closer to 40 mph. These strong trades are expected to continue into the weekend. Due to the trades, east-facing shores will see choppy surf conditions. The surf on eastern shores will build throughout the week and could reach high surf advisory conditions by Thursday or Friday.
Large surf is also impacting north and west-facing shores. A northwest swell will move across the state throughout the rest of today, and surf will peak just below high advisory criteria.
However, a second, much larger swell will arrive late Tuesday into Wednesday. This swell will create waves well above high surf advisory criteria and could even trigger high surf warnings late Wednesday. The swell energy will fade throughout Thursday.
